University of Cambridge (UK) is again the highest ranked university in the world, according to the latest Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranking of the world's best universities 2011/12. This is the second year running that Cambridge University has taken the No. 1 spot. Harvard University maintained the second highest position in the world, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology in third place (up two places from 5th in the 2010 ranking), and Yale University in fourth place (dropped a place from 3rd to 4th).
In Asia, the highest ranked institution is the University of Hong Kong (22nd globally), ahead of The University of Tokyo (25th globally), and National University of Singapore (NUS) (28th globally). Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has jumped up 16 places in 2011, ranked 58th in the world (a quantum leap from 74th place last year). This makes NTU one of the fastest-rising universities in the top 100 list.
In Australia, the highest ranked university is Australian National University (26th in the world). A total of 5 Australian institutions ranked in the global top 50. The others are: The University of Melbourne (31st), The University of Sydney (38th), The University of Queensland (48th), and The University of New South Wales (49th). Swinburne University of Technology has been ranked for the second consecutive year in the top 450 universities in the world by the QS World University Rankings. With an estimated 15,000 universities world wide, this ranking puts Swinburne in the top three per cent of universities in the world.

Elaborate Teachers' Day celebrations planned

CHENNAI: Educational institutions in the city are going all out to make their faculty feel special on Monday, Teachers' Day. Elaborate celebrations, from the weekend, have been planned - from booking movie tickets in bulk to taking them out for lunch to gifting them cars.

St John's International Residential School (SJIRS), which awarded an Alto car to the best teacher last year, on Saturday bestowed the honour on computer science teacher Julia Jeya Manohari.

"Teachers are rarely appreciated. When something goes wrong in class, parents accuse teachers of being partial or harsh. The only time parents compliment a teacher is when they compare them with another teacher. So, many teachers lack motivation," said Shree Niketan Matriculation School correspondent P Vishnucharan. The institution, along with Kaligi Ranganathan Montfort Matriculation Higher Secondary School, booked tickets for 110 teachers to watch "Deivathirumagal" on Sunday.

To Wings, a pre-school in Tambaram, organized a lunch for its teachers at Hotel Courtyard Marriott on Saturday. "If schoolteachers are not given due importance in society, their pre-school counterparts are held in contempt. They do a great job of ensuring their wards make a smooth transition from home to school and gain a healthy attitude towards learning. Yet they are not appreciated enough. So, only those too bored of sitting at home apply for it, unlike in Western countries where those who enjoy working with children opt for such a career. We wanted to give our teachers a day to remember and show that their contribution means a lot," said chief learning officer Juliet David.

Educational service providers too have made efforts to honour teachers. EzVidya has deputed specially designed mobile greeting vans to visit 20-25 schools in Chennai, Coimbatore, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Vijaywada and Delhi so students can leave messages for their teachers.

SJIRS senior principal R Kishore Kumar explained the gesture of gifting a car to a teacher each year: "The profession lacks the remuneration and recognition it deserves. The car is a status symbol. We wanted to show teachers that their status in society is as esteemed too."

Saree fever! School girls deck up for Teachers` Day

New Delhi: Whoever said Teachers` Day was just about celebrating student-teacher bonding! Young school girls are more than excited about the day as they get to drape the six-yard wonder for the first time, and spend a lot of time deciding whether to invest in new purchase or dig into their mother`s closet for the perfect pick.

In most schools here, Class 12 students are given the opportunity to step into the shoes of their teachers and teach junior classes for the day. Boys are asked to come in formals and girls get to wear a saree.

So choosing the right saree becomes the talk in the school corridors much before.

"I am excited, not because I am becoming a teacher, but because I will get to wear a saree. And especially the one I have been eyeing for a long time in my mom`s closet," Mansi Aswani of Bluebells School International, told IANS.

"I`ve got a blouse stitched especially for it. However, I will borrow beautiful jhumkis (danglers) from my elder sister and click a lot of pictures. I just hope all my efforts will get me compliments from everyone," she added.

Such is the excitement that girls even went shopping and splurged on accessories.

Teachers Day – Honouring Teachers

Teachers Day is celebrated as a tribute to the valuable contribution made by teachers to the society by imparting knowledge and enlightening and shaping the career of students. Celebration of Teachers Day is fairly popular in many countries across the world and is even acknowledged by UNESCO.

For students, Teachers Day is an occasion to pay reverence and gratitude to teachers for their selfless effort in shaping their career and enriching the education system in the process.

When is Teachers’ Day celebrated? The date for celebrating this special event varies from country to country across the world. In India, Teachers Day is celebrated on the 5th of September every year, whereas, China celebrates this event on 10th September every year. The celebration in each country is generally correlated to either significant personalities or achievements of milestone in the field of education. India celebrates Teachers Day on September 5 since 1962 as it is the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan, a prominent thinker, philosopher and an educator.

Most of the schools and institutions make elaborate preparations for the celebrations. The ceremony usually kicks off with a warm Teachers Day speech paying respect and thanking teachers for their contribution. This is often followed by a range of colourful cultural programs, feast and other activities which make the event special and memorable.

A few traditional ways of celebrating the event include presenting colourful flowers, beautiful Teachers Day cards or gifts to the teacher as tokens of love and admiration. But students often try innovative ways and ideas to celebrate Teachers Day.

Some rely on creative and attractive Teachers Day greeting cards adorned with captivating and touchy quotes and messages to convey the indebtedness unfailingly and also to capture the wonderful moments of the event. Others select lovely and popular Teachers Day quotes to convey their inner feeling of love for their teacher.

Sending animated or e-greeting card is also a rage in the contemporary times. Available absolutely free of cost, these Teachers Day Greetings e-cards have become a preferred way to send warm wishes and shower emotions on teachers.

Another modern and popular mode of wishing teachers today is the Teachers Day SMS. The advantage of sending SMS is that the message reaches its destination promptly and rarely goes unnoticed. For the celebration of Teachers Day, the text messages are available in varied languages allowing users to send SMS according to his/her preferred language.

All of us have been students at some stage of our life and have benefited from our teachers. Celebration of Teachers Day 2011 is a wonderful opportunity especially for all of us to show our gratitude and appreciation to our teachers.

Tribute to students... on Teachers' Day

Last Monday, as I entered the classroom, I was in for a pleasant surprise. The entire class of 50 erupted in cheerful clapping. On my table was a cake — complete with candles, flowers, cards, balloons and chocolates. No, the occasion was not Teachers' Day. It was actually my last day in school. While I was still contemplating how to break the news, the students somehow got wind of it (I suspect with my daughter's connivance) and arranged a farewell party.

Amid the hullabaloo and ‘please don't go' requests my mind raced back to the day the Principal called me to his office and entrusted me with a specific charge. I must admit I was reluctant to become class teacher of XI Commerce — the most notorious in the whole school. Having passed their class X examination with not so flying colours, these children could not join the elite Science stream, which was traditionally reserved for the brightest. With no other subject option left, these students unwillingly landed up in Commerce.

Thus, I began with a bunch of students whose self-esteem had taken a beating and were labelled as trouble-makers and attention-seekers. Any mishap — be it a broken windowpane in class VI, some graffiti in the boys' toilet or a lost duster in the junior section — would bring the property in-charge thundering into my class threatening to fine the culprits. Many a time I was at my wits' end trying to deal with internal squabbles and the complaints from other teachers. But each time I announced in exasperation that I would give up the charge of the class if the students didn't improve, there would be a strong protest followed by a sincere promise to behave better next time.

I soon realised that each one of these students had a specialty. The sleepy looking one was an artist, the quietest one had a beautiful handwriting, the shyest was exceptional at playing soccer, the weirdest had an excellent memory, the naughtiest was a total errands boy and the academically weakest had a tremendous sense of devotion. Why could I not see these qualities right at the beginning? How easily was I giving up on them? Gaining ground inch by inch, I finally managed to crack the toughest nut. Some tiny spark in a child would fill me with hope that these students were not incorrigible. Moreover, having achieved this without ever punishing them reassured me that I was on the right path.

Words of encouragement

Slowly, with words of encouragement and delegation of responsibilities, I could build their confidence and win their trust. There was a semblance of sanity in the classroom and we began working as a team. My task as English teacher multiplied manifold as the majority in the class were children of army personnel from the Gorkha regiment. I had to first undo Nepali and then Hindi in order to teach English. As a corrective measure, we started collecting a paltry sum of one rupee from anyone caught not speaking English in the classroom.

Very soon, we had a handsome amount. I had planned to spend the money, taking the students on a class picnic. To my amazement, they unanimously wanted to donate it to charity. They unknowingly cleared a crucial test that day.

As I stood facing them for the one last time, I joked that I had no clue they would be so happy at my leaving. As if my words broke a surging dam, I saw tears rushing down a few faces. I was left with no words to reciprocate their feelings, only tears which I too couldn't hold any longer.

I wouldn't trade their love and adoration for anything in the world. In the course of teaching them, I got enriched. Like the proverbial ‘potter' showing patience and sensitivity, I could gradually mould these children into caring individuals with self-worth. This Teachers' Day I wish to salute all my students.
